Schering-Plough has recently been named a 2009 ENERGY STAR partner of the year for outstanding energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally it's plant in Clevelend, Tennessee, earned an EPA ENERGY STAR for ranking in the top 25% for energy performance nationwide. This facility on average uses nearly 35% less energy than similar pharmaceutical plants in the US. With the pharmaceutical sector in the US spending over $800 million on energy annually there is huge potential for cost-savings with efficient energy management. Schering-Plough set up a Global Energy Management Team responsible for developing global initiatives to reduce energy consumption. From 2007 to 2008 energy intensity was reduced by 3.7%. They actively monitor and control energy consumption across 16 million square feet of facility space worldwide through a web-based data management system. They are also investing in ‘greener' sources of energy and the Tennessee plant boasts one of the largest rooftop solar panel installations in North America.
