Title: Practical and Theoretical Implications of Single Use Bioreactor Technology

This exclusive webinar brings you the single-use alternative to conventional stirred tank bioreactors.

This single-use bioreactor system features elements found in traditional stainless steel systems, but with components that offer all the inherent benefits found in single-use technology. Including speed, cost benefits, flexibility and simplicity.

The technology is examined from the view point of those who have implemented and are currently using it. The engineering characteristics of the technology will also be reviewed. You will hear how single-use technology works and what to expect.

Our webinar kicks off with an end-user account of the installation and implementation of production scale single-use bioreactors.  Our speaker gives you a frank and honest insight of his experiences in the following areas:

  • Scalability: how they scaled up to a 2000L single-use bioreactor (S.U.B.)
  • Implementation considerations, including lead times for facility modifications
  • Post-implementation staffing requirements
  • Choice of control systems
  • Process economics
  • Lessons learned

The second part of our session focuses on the theory behind the technology. Including, demonstrating the engineering characteristics of the S.U.B. using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Our speaker will present a background on CFD, followed by:

  • Experimental setup
  • Spatial and time dependent data of the fluid in the 50L S.U.B.
  • Fluid velocity
  • Flow regime
  • Concentration gradients in mixing processes
  • Power input - to demonstrate scalability
  • Turbulence distribution

The presentation will conclude with the evaluation and comparison of numerically predicted fluid velocities in the 50L S.U.B. using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV).

Michael Radovan joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2010 and has more than 24 years experience in the healthcare, life sciences, and engineered-technology industries. As the Associate Director of Product Management for Single-use Systems, he is responsible for driving the product and marketing strategy for Thermo Scientifics' single-use bioreactors and mixers.

Michael started his career in engineering with Abbott, followed by roles in engineering, quality, operations management and marketing. He has also worked as a global marketing/product manager within Emerson Electric and as a divisional business unit manager within ITW.  Michael has held senior-level positions with privately-held companies since moving from ITW.
